WLFI Turns to Buybacks After a 60% Slide — The Token Is on the Menu 🪙
World Liberty Financial, the Trump-backed cryptocurrency venture, launched a buyback program for its WLFI governance token after the asset lost more than 60% of its value this year. The company said Thursday that the program could initially be funded by revenue generated from reserves backing its USD1 stablecoin and other sources. WLFI said repurchases are intended to encourage participation in protocol governance and give long-term investors greater voting power, adding that token buybacks could become a regular part of its strategy.
The announcement followed continued selling pressure after this week’s US midterm elections, in which Republicans performed worse than expected. WLFI fell about 10% since the vote and was down more than 60% for the year, putting the Trump family’s financial stake in World Liberty Financial back in focus. Trump reportedly still holds billions of WLFI tokens.
The token’s decline also came amid broader scrutiny of Trump-linked cryptocurrency ventures. Democrats’ victories in the November 3 midterm elections shifted control of Congress, giving the party majorities in both the House and Senate. Trump Media’s transfer of 4,259 BTC worth $343.67 million further coincided with record lows for Trump-linked tokens.
WLFI holders are also expected to focus on the November 22 gala dinner, which is scheduled to bring together Trump and the token’s top 185 holders.
