White House Takes a Coin Look at SEC’s Crypto Broker Rule Rewrite 🪙

The White House is reviewing an SEC proposal to revise financial and operational requirements for broker-dealers handling cryptocurrency assets. The Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs received the filing under regulatory identifier 3235-AN48.

The proposal covers amendments to Rules 15c3-1 and 15c3-3, which establish net capital requirements and customer-protection standards for broker-dealers. The SEC also plans to amend Rules 17a-3 and 17a-4, which govern business records and record-retention requirements.

The agency said the changes are intended to update its regulatory framework for cryptocurrency markets. An SEC spokesperson told Bloomberg the commission expects to consider “fit-for-purpose rules” for crypto markets.

OIRA classifies the submission as economically important and lists it at the proposed-rule stage. The regulatory review remains pending, with no legal deadline recorded for the White House to complete its examination.
