Thailand Pulls the Plug on Bitget in a Crackdown on Unlicensed Crypto Trading
Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) plans to block access to Bitget from Dec. 5 after filing a criminal complaint against BG Limited, the exchange’s operator, over alleged unlicensed crypto trading.
The SEC said Thursday that it had notified Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society to restrict access to Bitget’s website, associated domains and mobile app. The regulator advised users to take action regarding assets held on the platform before the deadline.
According to the SEC, Bitget offered crypto trading services between 2022 and 2025, charged trading fees and promoted the exchange through Thai-language websites and social media channels. The regulator said those activities violated Thailand’s digital asset business licensing requirements.
The complaint was filed with Thailand’s Economic Crime Suppression Division for investigation. Prosecutors will determine whether to bring charges, while courts will decide whether criminal liability applies. Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society can restrict access to unlicensed crypto trading platforms under a 2025 decree designed to protect investors and combat financial crime.
Bitget did not immediately respond to Cointelegraph’s request for comment.
