Polygon’s hard fork plan: send stolen POL home while keeping the supply math boring

Polygon validators have proposed a hard fork to recover approximately 70.49 million POL stolen in separate security incidents involving Binance and Polymarket. The tokens were valued at about $6.8 million, while another report placed the total at $6.5 million.

The proposal would remove 23.86 million POL, worth $2.31 million, from four addresses linked to the Polymarket hack and 46.63 million POL, worth about $4.51 million, from one address linked to the Binance hack. The recovered tokens would be transferred to verified recovery wallets designated by Polymarket and Binance at a predetermined block without changing POL’s total supply.

Polygon block producers have already blocked transactions from the five attacker-controlled addresses through Bor’s transaction blocklist, preventing the funds from moving. The proposal describes the restrictions as temporary and says they cannot return the stolen assets to their owners. If approved, developers expect client development and testnet rehearsals to be completed within approximately two weeks.

The proposal requires governance approval and testing on Polygon’s Amoy testnet before activation. It is scheduled for discussion during the Polygon Protocol Governance Call on November 5, but no mainnet hard-fork date has been confirmed. The incidents occurred on October 29 and 30, 2026, following Binance’s record $6.3 billion hack on Oct. 29 and a separate incident in which Polymarket temporarily suspended trading after a third-party provider was compromised.
