Debt Reset Countdown: $BTC and Gold May Get a Five-Year Head Start 🪙
On-chain analyst Willy Woo expects a historic debt-cycle reset within five years, citing Ray Dalio’s warning that the global financial system could enter a period of debt restructuring, currency devaluation and monetary intervention. “Every 50-80 years or so the accounting is reset, and it all starts again… Next 5 years is the reset (Dalio),” Woo wrote on X. He described gold and Bitcoin as an “escape hatch” until governments tamper with the fiat ledger.
The warning follows a sustained increase in US public debt under Republican and Democratic presidents since the 1990s, according to the BBC. The US holds roughly $32 trillion in marketable Treasury debt, while net new issuance could reach $2.1 trillion this year as foreign buyers pull back, interest costs rise and debt supply outpaces demand. Federal debt is projected to rise sharply, with heavy refinancing needs through 2028, X/@RayDalio reported.
Dalio has argued that governments facing unpayable debt have historically chosen money printing over restructuring, a process that can favor assets outside the fiat debt system. Gold has served that role for centuries, while Bitcoin supporters describe it as a digital and portable alternative. Macro analyst Luke Gromen outlined a scenario in which gold could reach $18,000 if a full dollar crisis created demand for a neutral reserve asset and confidence in Treasuries weakened.
Bitcoin is currently testing the Trader Realized Price, a CryptoQuant metric tracking the average cost basis of coins moved in the past one to three months. The level has historically acted as support or resistance. “…If BTC successfully holds around the Trader Realized Price and begins to move away from it again, it would suggest that the average cost basis of recent participants is still functioning as support. If price breaks below it and fails to reclaim the level, the interpretation changes…,” crypto analyst Trdaer_Gemini noted. Analysts still characterize the debt cycle as being in its mid-phase, with rates rising but the full effects not yet reached.
