Election afterparty: Democrats sweep Congress, $BTC pops, Trump-linked tokens tumble
Democrats won control of the U.S. House and Senate in the November 3 midterm elections, giving the party greater influence over legislation and oversight of President Donald Trump’s administration. Democrats flipped at least seven Senate seats in Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina, according to the Associated Press, and will take control of House committees in January 2027. The new Congress is sworn in on January 3 2027.
The result was largely reflected in crypto prices. Bitcoin (BTC) rose more than 4% over 24 hours to around $80,500 and briefly reached a six-week low before rebounding above $80,000. Ether (ETH) climbed 6% to $2,433, while BNB rose 3%, XRP gained 2.6% and Solana (SOL) advanced 2.5%. The overall crypto market increased 3.4% to $2.69 trillion. André Dragosch, head of research at Bitwise Europe, said, “I think the Democratic sweep was largely priced in going into the midterms.”
Political tokens moved in the opposite direction. Official Trump (TRUMP) fell 17% over 24 hours to $1.33, World Liberty Financial (WLFI) dropped over 7% to $0.047 and MELANIA declined nearly 13% to around $0.066. A token named after Vice President JD Vance (VANCE) fell nearly 12%, although it has no confirmed official connection to the vice president. The political memecoin sector’s total market capitalization fell more than 16% to $477 million as trading volume jumped 123% to $437 million, according to CoinMarketCap data from around 5:32 p.m. UTC.
Lawmakers will now confront the stalled CLARITY Act, which would establish rules for crypto markets and federal oversight of digital assets and trading activity. The House passed it 294–134 in July 2025, but the Senate rejected a procedural vote 49–50 on September 15, short of the 60 votes required. Disputes include ethics restrictions on government officials’ crypto interests and rewards paid on stablecoins. The latest version circulating in the Senate includes restrictions on the president and his family engaging in cryptocurrency business activities, although the ban is written to expire and would not apply to President Donald Trump’s sons.
Industry spending failed to prevent Sherrod Brown from returning to the Senate after defeating Republican Jon Husted in Ohio. Crypto PACs spent more than $64 million in the race, following Fairshake’s $40 million effort to unseat Brown in 2024. About $176 million was spent across 100 seats during the 2026 election cycle, including primaries, up from more than $130 million in 2024, with Fairshake and affiliated PACs accounting for $154.5 million across 89 races. Brown wrote, “I’ll be damned if crypto billionaires decide this race,” in a campaign message.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren is in line to chair the Senate Banking Committee, while Rep. Maxine Waters is positioned to run the House Financial Services Committee. James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares, said, “My sense is that Bitcoin had largely priced in a Democratic sweep, leaving room for a relief rally as uncertainty clears.” Tim Sun, senior analyst at HashKey, said the result increases uncertainty around crypto policy but did not constitute a “major negative catalyst.” Democrats’ control does not automatically reverse existing SEC and CFTC guidance or the administration’s pro-crypto actions, but it could complicate efforts to renew political momentum for favorable legislation and increase scrutiny of Trump-linked digital asset businesses.
