Uptober Ghosted: $BTC Fell 7% as AI Sent Oil, Bonds and Risk to Rival Tracks

Bitcoin ($BTC) lost about 7% in October, breaking its historically bullish “Uptober” pattern and marking a second straight red October after October 2025 also ended lower. The asset now sits under $80,000, having previously risen in 10 of 13 Octobers through 2025, with a median gain near 15%. Bitcoin also dropped about 4% late Thursday, hours before Friday’s Nasdaq selloff and alongside the historic hack of Binance.

The October decline coincided with a breakdown in the 80% correlation seen this year between oil futures and Treasury yields. As the artificial intelligence (AI) trade cracked, oil prices climbed while bond yields fell. The Magnificent Seven, the largest AI-linked US companies, retreated throughout October, and markets began treating AI weakness as a signal for US growth.

“In the market’s mind, the geopolitical risk is secondary to AI risk,” said Jeffrey Rosenberg, a senior portfolio manager at BlackRock, in an interview with CNBC. Rosenberg described third-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) as strong and AI-related, noting that business investment rose 12.7%, the biggest gain outside the pandemic since 2011. Google also posted its largest one-day drop on record last week, erasing about $500 billion in value.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh disagreed on Wednesday, arguing that capital spending is broadening beyond narrow pockets and identifying rising oil as a factor in the central bank’s inflation fight. By mid-October, rate futures had pointed to a December hike as Federal Reserve rate hike bets increased.

The shift extended to corporate credit. Microsoft returned to the public bond market after nearly a decade, with credit default swap spreads, which price default insurance, near 55 compared with about 300 for Oracle. Rosenberg said the bond market can absorb an expected $4 trillion of AI debt over four years, with the cost taking the form of lower prices and wider spreads that place the AI buildout at the center of bond pricing rather than only equity sentiment.
