Binance’s $6.3B Heist Sends Digital Money to the Oval Office

President Donald Trump said he has “always felt it was a little bit dangerous” to move money digitally as the White House confirmed it is investigating the $6.3B Binance hack, the largest crypto theft on record. Speaking from the Oval Office on Friday, October 31, Trump acknowledged Binance’s claim that the situation was “pretty much under control” and added, “We’ll see.”

The breach originated from a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, according to the available reporting. The attacker accessed a service container and initiated unauthorized withdrawals across roughly 10 blockchain networks in about 20 minutes.

Blockchain analytics firms Chainalysis and TRM Labs linked the attack to North Korea’s Lazarus Group and its TraderTraitor unit. Trump, however, said, “We don’t know” when questioned about North Korea’s involvement.

About $3B in stolen assets has been frozen. Binance said its SAFU fund and reserves will cover losses.
