The $5 Wrench Became an $8M+ Theft: Texas Brothers Get 326 Months

Two Texas brothers who held a Minnesota family at gunpoint and forced a father to transfer more than $8 million in cryptocurrency have been sentenced to a combined 326 months in prison. Raymond Christian Garcia and Isiah Angelo Garcia, both of Waller, Texas, received sentences of 180 months and 186 months respectively, or 15 and 15-and-a-half years, from U.S. District Judge Donovan Frank in St. Paul, according to the Justice Department. Both pleaded guilty in June.

According to court documents, the brothers traveled from Texas to Grant, Minnesota, and on Sept. 19, 2025, entered the victim’s home, zip-tied the family and held them at gunpoint for more than nine hours while demanding access to the father’s crypto accounts. After the father failed to transfer the amount they expected, the brothers compelled him to drive one of them to the family’s cabin in upstate Minnesota to retrieve additional hardware wallets and move the funds. The victim’s son called 911, the brothers fled and were later arrested near Houston.

“The Garcia brothers committed a brazen and calculated act of violence against the victim and his family,” U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen said in a statement. The FBI’s Christopher Dotson said the brothers “violated the sanctity of a home” in “a brazen act of violence and greed.” The case illustrates the “wrench attack,” in which criminals use physical force rather than hacking to seize crypto. In 2009, the webcomic xkcd published the “$5 wrench attack” strip, portraying the use of physical threats to bypass encryption.

Chainalysis counted 46 violent incidents in the first half of 2026 involving more than $30 million stolen, while CertiK pegged losses even higher. Recent cases include a French kidnapping in which workers’ children were held hostage and a UK home invasion that ended in prison terms for the attackers. Separately, Binance is working with the FBI and U.S. Secret Service after hackers stole $6.4 billion from the cryptocurrency exchange, according to Reuters, with Circle joining the recovery effort by freezing more than $800 million in assets connected to the attack.
