Bitcoin’s Next Big Job: Putting 7.8 Million BTC to Work Without Minting a Single Extra Coin
A new RootstockLabs report estimates that just 1.5% of Bitcoin’s ($BTC) supply currently participates in lending and Bitcoin-native finance, while identifiable institutional investors hold roughly 3.9 million BTC. The infrastructure developer says putting more of those holdings to work through lending, structured credit and balance-sheet financing could create additional demand for $BTC without changing its fixed supply.
The report outlines a hypothetical scenario in which institutional Bitcoin holdings double to 7.8 million BTC. If 5% of those holdings earned a 5% annual yield, institutions would collectively generate 19,500 BTC a year. RootstockLabs describes that figure as potential returns on existing holdings rather than a forecast of new Bitcoin demand, drawing a comparison with gold’s jewelry and electronics uses as it examines how monetary assets develop utilities beyond being stores of value.
MARA’s $750 million in Bitcoin-backed loans to help finance a planned power plant acquisition in Ohio illustrates one proposed use. The arrangement allows MARA to retain its Bitcoin holdings while using them as collateral to finance real-world infrastructure. RootstockLabs identifies two broader sources of financial utility: generating returns from existing Bitcoin holdings and using Bitcoin alongside fiat-denominated liabilities to improve corporate balance-sheet efficiency.
Asked about the risks of Bitcoin’s growing financialization, RootstockLabs institutional propositions director and report author Tony DiCarlo said: “Yes, financialisation carries real risks. Fractional reserves, rehypothecation and excess leverage can grow around any scarce asset. Bitcoin’s traits reduce some of that risk as collateral is verifiable on-chain, liquidation rules are programmable and the supply of collateral cannot be diluted.” He said borrower defaults, custody failures, legal enforceability and Bitcoin’s volatility remain concerns, but argued that the benefits of financialization could far outweigh those risks.
