Sam Bankman-Fried went from crypto court to Netflix’s inbox 🎬

Sam Bankman-Fried answered questions from Anthony Boyle by email while the actor was preparing to portray the former FTX CEO in Netflix’s “The Altruists,” according to a Wednesday Vanity Fair report. Boyle said he “promised him that I wouldn’t divulge anything,” but Bankman-Fried reportedly replied to most of the actor’s questions ahead of the series’ release, which is set for about three weeks.

Boyle said he was “interested in what possessed someone to become the world’s youngest billionaire,” adding, “I’m not really interested in money or crypto or finance. It was: What makes them do the things that they do?” A trailer Netflix released on Oct. 8 indicates that “The Altruists” will focus on Bankman-Fried’s relationship with Caroline Ellison, who led FTX’s sister company, Alameda Research.

Bankman-Fried was convicted of seven felony counts tied to the misuse of customer funds at FTX and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Ellison was released in January after serving more than a year under a plea deal with US authorities.

Former FTX COO Constance Wang said the screen portrayals left her “feel physically upset,” while she described Bankman-Fried as more “socially awkward” than Boyle demonstrated. Bankman-Fried was also the subject of Michael Lewis’ 2023 book “Going Infinite,” and Ben McKenzie’s documentary “Everyone Is Lying to You for Money” featured a 2022 interview with him before FTX’s collapse.
