DRIP Meets Crypto: Franklin’s ETFs Send Stock Dividends to Bitcoin

Franklin Templeton’s Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FBEQ) and Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FIBT) have become effective, clearing the key regulatory step for the $1.8 trillion asset manager’s planned Nasdaq launch. The latest SEC filing made the N-1A registration statement effective, and Nasdaq approved the products to list and trade under the tickers FBEQ and FIBT.

FBEQ is built around the 500 largest US companies, while FIBT tracks the 100 biggest Nasdaq-listed firms, excluding finance companies. Each starts with 95% in stocks and 5% in Bitcoin exposure. “All regular and special dividends are reinvested into Bitcoin at the market open on the day following the dividend ex-date, which increases Bitcoin exposure over time,” the prospectus says.

The funds will not hold Bitcoin directly. They can purchase Bitcoin funds and ETPs, including Franklin-affiliated products, alongside futures, options and other instruments. Franklin Templeton says it may waive fees on its own products but can end the waiver at any time. The larger fund charges 0.09% a year, or $9 on every $10,000 in year one.

The allocation is rebalanced every quarter, with any Bitcoin share above 5% cut back to 4.5%. If it passes 20% between reviews, it is reset to 4.5% within two business days. Dividends therefore create recurring demand for Bitcoin exposure, while a rally that lifts the allocation can trigger sales and leave a lower starting allocation for subsequent purchases.

The products enter a market where spot Bitcoin ($BTC) ETFs approved in 2024 continue to attract global interest. Franklin Templeton’s prospectus describes Bitcoin as “highly speculative and prone to big price swings.” BlackRock recommends a 1-2% Bitcoin position, while Himalaya Capital founder Li Lu called crypto “fundamentally bogus” last week. $BTC traded toward $81,500 as traders remained cautious ahead of the Fed rate decision.
