Crypto crash nears the top of Moody’s risk matrix—yet its economic blast radius is limited

A cryptocurrency market crash ranks among the economic shocks Moody’s Analytics considers most likely over the next 12 to 18 months, although the firm assesses the potential damage to the wider economy as relatively limited. The warning comes two days before the Federal Reserve’s October 28 interest rate decision, as investors contend with elevated inflation and mounting financial-market uncertainty.

Drawing on economic data, forecasting models and expert analysis, Moody’s Analytics, the economic research division of global financial firm Moody’s, mapped 27 potential shocks according to likelihood and economic impact. Chief economist Mark Zandi shared the latest risk matrix on Monday, and a crypto market crash sits near the top of its probability scale. The matrix provides no specific crash probability or price forecast. High borrowing costs threaten speculative investments, while a deeper stock market selloff could pressure crypto prices further and leveraged positions risk accelerating losses through forced liquidations.

Moody’s identifies four worsening risks with potentially greater economic consequences: an AI stock selloff, an escalating Iran war, bond market turmoil and Federal Reserve policy mistakes. Bond markets are already showing strain, with the US 10-year Treasury yield recently reaching 5.31% before retreating toward 4.99% on Monday.

Zandi believes further monetary tightening could worsen the situation. “The Fed won’t raise interest rates again when it meets this week, and it shouldn’t,” he wrote. The Fed raised rates in September to 3.75%–4%, while inflation remains elevated. Traders now assign just a 10.5% probability to another October hike, according to CME FedWatch. Wednesday’s decision offers a critical test for crypto investors, with a hold potentially providing temporary relief even as persistent inflation and further tightening later this year remain significant threats.
