OpenAI Goes Multi-Cloud: Google Joins the Chain While Microsoft Keeps the Crown đź‘‘
OpenAI has partnered with Google Cloud to offer business customers three advanced AI models, expanding its distribution beyond Microsoft without ending the technology company’s role as its primary cloud partner.
According to Google Cloud, the first rollout includes GPT-Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, and GPT-6 Luna for varying business requirements. GPT-Astra offers higher cost performance for complicated coding and research, GPT-6.1 Sol provides lower cost performance for professional tasks, and GPT-6 Luna enables faster, normal day to day functioning.
The models will enter private preview, with developers able to start linking Codex workflows via Google’s infrastructure in the meantime. Google also plans to introduce OpenAI models into Gemini for business and Google Antigravity.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the company wants customers to choose models suited to their work, helping them achieve “optimal quality and lower costs.”
Microsoft remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner under the existing relationship as distribution expands. Microsoft is also working on its own AI services, while OpenAI has opened access to its models via AWS and Oracle. The expansion comes amid rising interest in AI infrastructure; in October, the Trump administration discussed potential government measures concerning the sector.
