Solana’s Alpenglow Targets 150ms Finality—Putting Consensus on the Fast Lane
Solana activated the Alpenglow consensus upgrade on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, targeting about 150 milliseconds for block finality. Anza confirmed activation at approximately 14:00 UTC, tied to the start of epoch 1064 at slot 459,653,000. The project was introduced as a push for 40x faster finality, while its published comparison of about 150 milliseconds with the previous 12.8 seconds represents roughly an 85x improvement.
The network’s largest consensus overhaul since its 2020 launch replaces TowerBFT with Votor, a mechanism in which validators exchange votes directly and bundle them into certificates off-chain. Blocks can finalize in one to two voting rounds instead of multiple on-chain rounds.
For validators, Alpenglow replaces about 2 SOL in daily vote fees with a fixed 0.8 SOL per-epoch ticket. Anza projects that the change will reduce validator operating costs by about 60%.
Activation followed an 18-month development period and six testnet wipes. The Rotor data-dissemination phase has not yet been scheduled for mainnet, so the upgrade’s full performance gains remain staged.
