Snap’s $2,195 AR Drop Just Landed an Iron Man

Snap Specs named Robert Downey Jr. its honorary Chief Customer Experience Officer ahead of the $2,195 augmented reality (AR) glasses’ planned sale later this fall. The appointment leans on Downey’s role as Tony Stark, the inventor he played in the Marvel films, and comes as the company has not said what the role pays.

The glasses layer apps, games, and an AI assistant over the real world. In new videos, Downey shows how they can help users improve their golf game, watch shows anywhere, and learn new skills. SPECS announced the hire on X: “Lights on. 💡 Introducing SPECS x Robert Downey Jr. https://t.co/ler9eV0u4t pic.twitter.com/PGEbPJCJlY — SPECS (@specs) October 20, 2026”

Snap (SNAP) shares fell when CEO Evan Spiegel unveiled the glasses at the Augmented World Expo (AWE) in June, with TradingView cited for the stock price. The stock has gained 7.59% over the past five days and almost 40% over three months, but remains 22.48% lower since the start of the year. Meta sells its own $1,299 VR glasses, while Snap Specs costs almost $900 more; Meta’s model is a VR device rather than AR glasses.

The terms of Downey’s deal remain undisclosed. In June, tech reporter Alex Heath said Snap was in talks to pay Downey about $100 million, but neither side has confirmed that figure. A stock-based deal could dilute shareholders’ holdings.

Snap also signed enterprise partners for Specs in September, including Nvidia, AWS, and Salesforce. Rival Meta has received Wall Street backing, with JPMorgan raising its Meta stock price target after the Muse AI agent launch. Snap has not disclosed Downey’s compensation or other terms of the agreement, and the glasses remain scheduled to go on sale later this fall.
