From Blockchain Passenger to Validator: MoneyGram Takes a Seat on XDC
MoneyGram has joined XDC Network as an institutional validator, confirming transactions, maintaining the shared ledger and voting on how the chain is governed. The 85-year-old remittance company, which serves around 60 million customers, must stake XDC for the role, marking a shift from merely issuing or settling on public blockchains to helping run one.
MoneyGram partnered with its first public blockchain in 2019 and has used Stellar since October 2021 to convert USDC to cash and back for wallet users. In June 2026, the company launched its own dollar-backed stablecoin, MGUSD, on Stellar. This year, it also became a node operator on Midnight and a validator on Tempo and Solana, extending its infrastructure role into remittance settlement, privacy and consumer scale.
XDC describes itself as a Layer-1 aimed at payments, trade finance and real-world assets, placing MoneyGram alongside companies working in trade finance. Its institutional validator set includes more than 20 operators: SBI Holdings, Deutsche Telekom, NTT DOCOMO Global, Clear Street, Hex Trust and Taurus. XDC describes the institutions as regulated entities across Asia, the Middle East, Europe and North America, with most serving as custodians, telecoms and digital asset firms; MoneyGram brings nearly 500,000 retail locations to the group.
“Every transaction on XDC is secured by our validators, and each institution that joins reinforces the infrastructure on which the future of global payments will be built,” said Ritesh Kakkad, Co-Founder, XDC Network. Kakkad tied the expansion to a future in which AI agents initiate payments on people’s behalf, while XDC said MoneyGram’s arrival underscores a shift toward companies that move money in the real economy.
In an October 15, 2026 post, MoneyGram said, “This is another step in our goal to build a more open infrastructure for global money movement.”
