Mt. Gox Creditors Get Another Year of Waiting — Trustees Add "See You in 2027" to the Schedule 🗓️
The rehabilitation trustee for Mt. Gox has extended the deadline for repaying creditors of the collapsed crypto exchange to Oct. 31, 2027, after the Tokyo District Court approved the move on Friday. The change applies to base, early lump-sum and intermediate payments, which were previously due by Oct. 31, 2026. Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi said repayments for creditors who completed the necessary procedures without complications were largely complete, but added that "many rehabilitation creditors still have not received their Repayments because they have not completed the necessary procedures for receiving Repayments." A "considerable number" of claims also remain unresolved due to processing issues during the payout workflow.
The postponement is the fourth one-year extension since the original Oct. 31, 2023 deadline, following extensions to 2024, 2025 and then 2026. Mt. Gox first began distributing Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash to creditors in July 2024, and the trustee said in March 2025 that more than 19,500 creditors had received funds. The latest notice did not disclose how many creditors remain unpaid or how much Bitcoin still needs to be distributed. Wallets attributed to Mt. Gox continue to hold approximately 34,388 $BTC, worth roughly $2.8 billion as of Tuesday, according to Arkham Intelligence data. Arkham's records show no outbound transfers from the estate since June, when the trustee moved 10,422.65 BTC — then valued at more than $739 million — out of cold storage, mostly to a new wallet plus 116.30 BTC routed to a known Mt. Gox hot wallet.
Mt. Gox was once the world's largest Bitcoin exchange before its 2014 collapse, in which roughly 850,000 BTC went missing. A Tokyo court approved its civil rehabilitation plan in 2021, setting the stage for the return of about $9 billion in Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash to an estimated 24,000 creditors via registered exchanges. Earlier announcements about the repayments weighed on the market; after the trustee said in June 2024 that distributions would begin that July, Bitcoin dropped as low as $61,060, down 6.5% in a single day, as traders priced in potential creditor selling pressure. Mt. Gox wallets held about 141,686 BTC at that time. Subsequent delays have drawn far less reaction, with the October 2024 extension briefly lifting the price by keeping potential supply off the market.
