Strategy Adds Bitcoin While MSCI "Delisting" Whispers Make Everyone Else Nervous
Strategy, the business intelligence firm formerly known as MicroStrategy, purchased additional Bitcoin even as unverified reports circulated that MSCI was preparing to drop the stock from its roster. The buying was disclosed in a regulatory filing and reported on Jan. 19, with the precise number of $BTC acquired cited in the company's standard 8-K submission.
MSCI's index decisions are reviewed quarterly, and the company has not publicly confirmed any imminent change to Strategy's status. Market participants pointed to the filing as evidence that Strategy's leadership continued to follow a stated playbook of acquiring $BTC regardless of short-term index speculation, while skeptics used the same filing to argue that the firm was accelerating purchases ahead of a possible delisting.
Strategy executives, including co-founder and Executive Chairman Michael Saylor, have repeatedly framed Bitcoin as the company's primary treasury reserve asset, a position first adopted in 2020 and expanded through successive capital raises and convertible note offerings. The company has funded purchases through a mix of equity sales, convertible senior notes and excess operating cash.
A Strategy representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the latest purchase or on the MSCI reports. The company's $BTC holdings, per its own disclosures, are the largest of any publicly traded corporation.
