Mastercard Slaps Fraud-Detection Spell on Stablecoins Before They Vanish Onchain 🪙
Mastercard unveiled Stablecoin Security on Monday at Money20/20 USA, introducing a tool that lets banks and payment providers flag fraud, scams and sanctions exposure in dollar-pegged token transactions before funds settle on a blockchain. The product combines Mastercard's payment intelligence with blockchain analytics to generate a risk score ahead of settlement and to monitor transactions throughout their lifecycle.
The service, delivered through a platform-agnostic API, plugs into existing banking compliance and fraud-detection workflows. It examines transaction details, sources of funds, and possible connections to restricted individuals or organizations. Mastercard said Stablecoin Security also tracks risk across transactions that involve both traditional currencies and stablecoins.
Borderless.xyz and Keyrails, both alumni of Mastercard's Start Path blockchain accelerator, are the first program participants. Mastercard said the solution is launching in North America first, with worldwide commercial availability expected next year and a broader rollout planned for 2027, including through BVNK, the stablecoin infrastructure firm Mastercard acquired in August for $1.8 billion.
"Stablecoins are creating new possibilities for value exchange, but financial institutions need the right intelligence and controls to participate with confidence," said Ann Johnson, Mastercard's executive vice president of security solutions. Mastercard cited a Bank for International Settlements study of 593 million stablecoin transfers in 2025 that found nearly 60% were complex, multi-step payments, complicating risk assessment across a transaction's full journey.
The launch extends Mastercard's stablecoin strategy beyond payments. The company has rolled out a Global Money Platform with BVNK that lets businesses hold and move fiat and stablecoins through a single connection, secured a New York BitLicense covering stablecoins and tokenized deposits, moved to enable AI-agent payments alongside Coinbase and Ripple, and expanded stablecoin settlement to include Circle's USDC and Ripple's RLUSD. Mastercard said Stablecoin Security builds on its existing Crypto Credential and Crypto Secure offerings.
Stablecoin Security arrives as growth in the supply of digital dollars has slowed this year even as transaction volumes have accelerated, driven in part by remittances and cross-border payments. A recent Standard Chartered report projected the stablecoin market could reach $2 trillion by 2030, two years later than its initial forecast, underscoring the scale institutions are preparing for.
