Sparkassen Says "Ja" to Crypto: 230 Banks Ready to Make β¬0.99 Bitcoin Rain π©πͺ
Germany's Sparkassen savings bank network launched cryptocurrency trading on Monday, allowing customers to buy and sell $BTC, $ETH, $XRP, $SOL and $POL directly through the existing Sparkasse banking app. The service, branded "Krypto β powered by Deka," is operated by DekaBank and is being introduced gradually across participating savings banks, with no requirement for a separate securities account.
Customers of participating Sparkassen can trade the five listed digital assets within the investment section of the app, paying β¬0.99 per transaction plus spread costs tied to the difference between buying and selling prices. DekaBank functions as custodian of the assets, holding them on its own wallet infrastructure as part of trading arrangements with BΓΆrse Stuttgart, and provides customers with a binding price it guarantees for a limited time.
Holdings cannot be transferred directly into personal hardware wallets; withdrawals are restricted to approved crypto-asset providers within a jointly managed Omnibus wallet structure. Crypto assets held through the service are not covered by statutory deposit insurance, and DekaBank warns that trades may be delayed or unavailable at the desired time or price. No investment advice is given inside the Sparkasse app.
The rollout reaches more than 230 savings banks that have expressed interest, with five currently participating and a broader launch expected through the first half of 2027. The service reaches over 40 million customers across the Sparkassen network, making it one of the largest institutional crypto deployments in the European Union to date. Customer service operates Monday to Thursday from 8:00 to 18:00 and Friday until 17:00.
Separately, DZ Bank has backed a separate rollout of crypto trading among Germany's cooperative banks, extending crypto access beyond the Sparkassen channel. The launch comes as Germany placed 13th in Chainalysis' 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index, and tax treatment under current rules leaves private gains from crypto sales subject to a β¬1,000 annual exemption threshold that depends on individual circumstances and may change.
