White House Crypto Throne Sits Empty as Patrick Witt Logs Off 🪙

—By our Regulation & Policy Desk2 min read

Patrick Witt, the White House Executive Director of the President's Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, is leaving government service and returning to the private sector, the most recent adviser to President Donald Trump to depart a post that has not yet seen a publicly named successor. A White House official told CoinDesk's Jesse Hamilton that cryptocurrency and the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act would continue to be a Trump administration focus, even as the role previously filled by Witt, Harry Jung and Bo Hines remains vacant.

The timing leaves the executive branch navigating digital asset policy with no sitting point person while attention in Washington shifts toward next month's midterm election. The White House in 2027 will face a new Congress, a potential flip of the House of Representatives to Democratic control, and an unfinished legislative pipeline that observers expect to begin with tax measures before moving to market structure reform.

Independent of any legislation, rulemaking on digital assets is continuing across federal agencies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Treasury Department more broadly. The White House has not announced when Witt's position will be filled or whether a replacement will be named before the new Congress is sworn in.

Witt confirmed his departure publicly last week. No hearings specifically on digital asset policy were tracked for the current week, leaving the next public signal on the council's direction likely to come from any future personnel announcement or agency action.

The departure closes a stretch in which the White House's digital asset advisory role has seen three consecutive occupants cycle out without a permanent successor being identified, a pattern that digital asset policy observers in Washington are watching as the calendar moves toward 2027.
