Thirty-Nine Years After Black Monday, Crypto Survives Its Anniversary Bruised but Biting Back 🪙

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Bitcoin is trading at $82,161, down roughly 1.4% over the past seven days but up about 1% across the last 30 days, even as broader crypto markets posted steep weekly losses ahead of the 39th anniversary of the 1987 crash. Ethereum (ETH) fell 5.3% to $2,415, while BNB declined 3.3%, Solana 6.2%, XRP 7.2%, Dogecoin 9.4%, Hyperliquid 8.6% and Zcash 13.2%. Excluding Bitcoin, the average decline across major tokens reached 7.5%—about five times the drawdown recorded by $BTC. Further down the cap table, losses intensified. Starknet dropped 45%, LayerZero 24%, Pump.fun 22%, Ethena 20%, Fetch 20%, Midnight 19%, Canton 18%, Jupiter 18%, Raydium 18% and Filecoin 17%, with the twelve largest weekly losers averaging declines of more than 20%.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs shed $228.4 million across the week, while spot Ethereum ETFs lost $320.1 million, for combined outflows of $548.5 million. For the month of October, the two complexes have now bled a combined $1.86 billion. Ethereum's position is the more precarious. Its ETFs hold $14.5 billion in net assets against $12.9 billion of cumulative inflows, leaving roughly $1.6 billion of cushion before the entire product line slips underwater on a mark-to-market basis.

The current drawdown contrasts sharply with the mechanics of the original Black Monday, when automated selling fed automated selling in the absence of circuit breakers. Equity markets now deploy those safeguards, and South Korea's Kospi triggered one last week. Crypto exchanges operate without comparable halts, trading continuously through weekends, holidays and overnight sessions, including the October 10, 2025 cascade that repriced the entire market within hours.

The prevailing setup is a slow bleed rather than a cascading event, with Bitcoin holding steady while long-tail tokens absorb the heaviest losses and a modest bid returning across the board over the weekend. Broad concern that a Black Monday rerun could unfold today is itself a signal that the worst-case scenario is unlikely to materialize, since crashes rarely occur when cash is already sitting on the sidelines awaiting them. The Dow's 22.6% single-session plunge in 1987 remains the benchmark that today's tape is measured against, thirty-nine years later.
