AI Gets Junk Status, Bitcoin Maxis Get Standing Ovation 🎤
Anthropic, the developer behind Claude, received a BB+ credit rating from Kroll Bond Rating Agency (KBRA) in June, with the assessment becoming public in October. The rating sits one level below investment grade, signaling elevated credit risk and justifying higher borrowing costs for the artificial intelligence company. The assessment covered $4.4 billion in junior debt inside Anthropic's $35 billion AI chip financing arrangement, where that debt carried roughly 8.5% in annual yield compared with 5.75% on senior debt backed by Broadcom.
The disclosure arrives as US government borrowing costs climb, with the 10-year Treasury yield crossing 5.3% in early October to reach a 24-year high. Higher yields pressure the market value of existing bonds, exposing investors who sell before maturity to losses even on sovereign debt. KBRA's move on Anthropic has extended the conversation from a single AI borrower to the broader mechanics of fixed-income markets and traditional portfolio construction.
ParaFi investor Jeff Park publicly questioned the conventional 60/40 allocation of stocks and bonds, citing the shifting rate environment. Blockstream CEO Adam Back sharpened the framing in an October 17 post, writing, "Bitcoin is the hurdle rate." His argument treats every potential investment as a comparison against the returns available from holding $BTC, though Bitcoin's volatility and absence of guaranteed returns complicate any like-for-like assessment against government obligations.
Bitcoin analyst Willy Woo has separately warned that an economy built around $BTC-denominated debt could face slower growth as repayment burdens rise, while bond ETFs have continued to pull record inflows from investors seeking fixed-income exposure. That contrast underscores the persistence of traditional safe-asset demand, even as credit spreads widen. Anthropic's downgrade gives Bitcoin advocates additional data to cite, though whether that framing shifts allocations away from bonds remains undecided.
