Lagarde Plots Digital Euro While Inflation Still Has Energy to Burn 🔥

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said September's 3.8% euro area inflation rate was largely driven by elevated energy costs, which the ECB expects to ease next year, according to a statement delivered at the IMF Annual Meetings on Saturday. Lagarde told the gathering that an energy shock is projected to keep euro-area inflation above the bank's target through the first half of 2027, and that a measured policy response remains appropriate.

Alongside the inflation outlook, Lagarde signaled the ECB's advancing work on a central bank digital currency, describing it as a complement to physical cash. "In the retail space we are preparing to complement cash with its digital equivalent — the digital euro — for day-to-day payments," Lagarde said. "The digital euro will further stimulate innovation and competition in retail payments, ensuring that the continued co-existence of public and private solutions underpins Europe's strategic autonomy in payments."

Cointelegraph reported on Sept. 21 that the ECB had launched Pontes, a settlement system enabling financial institutions to clear wholesale tokenized asset transactions in central bank money. Pontes is positioned as an alternative to private settlement assets such as stablecoins, with a core set of services available at launch and full implementation expected by 2028.

The ECB has also indicated that the planned digital euro application will exceed EU accessibility standards, according to related reporting. Lagarde did not specify a launch timeline for retail use of the digital euro in her remarks.

The ECB's twin-track push comes as the broader crypto sector continues to grapple with regulatory frameworks across the European Union, where the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation has set new compliance requirements for issuers and service providers. Stablecoin issuers in particular face scrutiny over reserve backing and operational resilience under the new regime.
