Stablecoins Tried to Start a Party; USDT and USDC Ate the Whole Catering
Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC continue to tower over every other stablecoin issuer, with DefiLlama data showing USDT at $183.4B and USDC at $72.7B as of October 17, 2026. Together the two issuers command roughly $256B, more than 85% of the $302B stablecoin market, and no competing stablecoin has broken the $5B mark.
USDT alone holds a 60.6% share of the stablecoin market. USDC trails at $72.7B, anchored by institutional and regulated demand. Beyond that pair, the rankings fall off sharply: Sky Dollar (USDS) at $6.8B, Ethena's USDe at $4.7B, World Liberty Financial's USD1 at $4B, PayPal's PYUSD at $2.8B, and Ripple's RLUSD at $2.4B.
The figures underscore how concentrated stablecoin liquidity has become around the two largest issuers. DefiLlama's stablecoin tracker lists $302B in total issuance across all issuers, leaving the combined market capitalization of every non-USDT, non-USDC stablecoin at roughly $46B. Of that remaining pool, USDe, USD1, and PYUSD together account for less than 5% of the total market.
Industry participants attribute the duopoly's persistence to depth of secondary market liquidity, distribution through major exchanges and trading desks, and long-running trust among traders moving capital across venues. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino has repeatedly pointed to USDT's redemption throughput and cross-chain availability as structural advantages that smaller issuers have yet to match, though specific recent quotes from Ardoino on the October 17 figures were not included in the available reporting.
The data leaves newer entrants attempting to carve share in regulated payments, synthetic dollar products, and tokenized treasuries rather than competing head-on with USDT and USDC on volume. With Sky Dollar as the only non-Tether, non-Circle issuer above $5B, the gap between the top two stablecoins and the rest of the field remains the widest it has been in the current cycle.
