Bitcoin's $1.47B Options Expiry Crashes the Party, Iran Headline Crashes the Chart 📉
Bitcoin options worth $1.47 billion expired on October 16, adding to bearish pressure on $BTC as renewed concerns over potential U.S. military action against Iran weighed on broader risk sentiment. The expiration, which accounted for 4.5% of total options open interest, came as U.S. equities also pulled back on weaker macroeconomic data, dragging digital assets lower alongside traditional markets.
According to derivatives analytics platform Greeks.Live, 18,000 Bitcoin options contracts expired on Friday with a put-call ratio of 1 and a maximum pain price of $83,000. Greeks.Live noted that combined weakness across financial markets has been a primary headwind for cryptocurrencies this week, with digital assets largely following the downward trend set by U.S. stocks.
Greeks.Live also pointed to a lack of meaningful volatility expectations in the options market, stating that implied volatility had declined to a level where "35% represent[s] a floor with little room for further decline." The firm said this suggests recent price action has had limited impact on options pricing, reflecting a cautious stance among traders even as $BTC navigates heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
The simultaneous expiration and escalation in geopolitical tensions left Bitcoin extending its negative sentiment, with the largest cryptocurrency struggling to find a clear directional catalyst. Traders are now watching whether $BTC can stabilize above key technical levels or if the combination of macro and geopolitical headwinds will continue to suppress recovery attempts in the near term.
