Deutsche Bank's Crypto Custody Plot: Germany This Month, Asia by 2027 🏦
Deutsche Bank confirmed plans to launch Bitcoin and Ethereum custody services in Germany within weeks, with expansion to Asian financial centers targeted for 2027, pending regulatory approval. The country's largest lender will initially offer $BTC, $ETH and select stablecoins, including USD Coin ($USDC), EUR Coin ($EURC) and AllUnity's EUR ($EURAU), to institutional and corporate clients, according to a Sept. 16 press release.
Gerald Podobnik, co-head of Deutsche Bank's corporate bank, detailed the rollout during an Oct. 16 interview on the sidelines of the IMF/World Bank meetings in Bangkok. The custody platform will feature managed wallets, private key management, offline storage, multi-approval requirements for transactions and hardware protection, as described in the bank's September announcement. Stablecoin conversions and tokenized deposits remain on the product roadmap.
Deutsche Bank expects to receive regulatory approval for the custody offering in October under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulations, or MiCA. The European Securities and Markets Authority's interim MiCA register shows Deutsche Bank received authorization from Germany's Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, known as BaFin, on Monday. A Deutsche Bank spokesperson confirmed the timeline to media outlets.
The bank said the expansion supports its goal of achieving compound annual growth of 8% in corporate banking by 2028. In September 2023, Deutsche Bank partnered with cryptocurrency infrastructure platform Taurus to support its custody operations, and the company has continued building out the service line. BNY expanded its own digital asset custody services in Europe on Oct. 13 via a European entity registered under MiCA, underscoring the broader push by major Western banks into digital asset infrastructure.
Deutsche Bank has not disclosed which Asian financial centers it will target first. Spokespeople for the bank did not respond to requests for comment on the specific jurisdictions under consideration by the time of publication.
