Australia has released draft legislation to bring the automatic exchange of crypto tax information between countries into domestic law. The Treasury Laws Amendment Bill 2026: Tax information reporting, published by the Australian Treasury, is open for public comment until Oct. 28.
The bill would establish a framework to implement the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) in Australian law and create a domestic crypto reporting regime, according to the agency. Australia first signaled its intention to adopt CARF in November 2023 and ran a consultation on its proposed approach in late 2024.
The government then confirmed plans to implement both CARF and the domestic crypto reporting regime in its 2025–26 Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook, with international exchanges of crypto tax information scheduled to begin in 2028. The OECD approved CARF in August 2022 in response to tax evasion risks arising from the growth of crypto assets such as $BTC and $ETH.
Separately, Australian regulators are also seeking feedback on crypto platform rules ahead of a planned 2027 rollout, as the country moves to align digital asset oversight with global standards.
