Ledger Unveils $849 Atom Device After $93M Hardware Wallet Hack — Tape, Tape, Approve 🛡️

Ledger has announced Atom, an $849 Android-based crypto security device, at its Op3n event in Paris, with deliveries scheduled for 2027. The launch comes after a hardware wallet attack linked to $93 million in suspected losses involving physically modified Ledger devices.

Atom runs applications on an Android-based operating system, while a separate secure chip protects private keys and other sensitive information. A dedicated approval screen, governed by Ledger OS, cannot be tampered with by regular apps, according to the company. The device also includes a hardware switch for disconnecting its camera and microphone, and an active shield capable of identifying an open probe or modification attempt, Ledger said.

The new device will support the Ledger Wallet application and the Solana mobile Seeker app, providing access to Solana-based apps. Ledger also plans to roll out identity verification, secure messaging, and AI agent approval capabilities on its security platform.

The announcement comes amid broader concerns regarding AI risks to cryptocurrency security. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has recently issued a warning about the potential of AI-powered mathematics to undermine certain cryptographic methods, adding context to Ledger's emphasis on integrating AI-related approval features into its next-generation hardware.
