Starknet Asks Token Holders: "It's Not You, It's ETH" 💔

—By our Altcoins & Tokens Desk2 min read

Starknet, the zero-knowledge scaling project originally built as a layer-2 network on Ethereum, has opened a community vote on whether to spin out into a fully autonomous Layer 1 blockchain. The proposal, put forward by StarkWare, went to a token-holder vote on October 15, 2026, and markets responded immediately. The native $STRK token climbed as much as 25% on the day the vote launched, according to TradingView data.

The governance proposal frames the move as a response to long-standing concerns about Ethereum's roadmap, including its reliance on cryptographic assumptions that could eventually be broken by quantum computers. Becoming an independent chain would, in StarkWare's telling, allow Starknet to upgrade its base layer without waiting for the main altcoin network's consensus. The proposal must still pass a token-holder vote before any migration begins.

The price action adds to a volatile month for the token. In the first weeks of October, $STRK had rallied roughly 200% before pulling back alongside the broader crypto market. The fresh 25% leg up on vote day was tracked on TradingView's $STRK chart.

StarkWare has not given a target date for any potential migration, and the outcome of the community vote will determine whether Starknet proceeds with plans to decouple from Ethereum entirely. Further updates from the team are expected once voting closes.
