Altcoins Get Alt-Punched as Macro Jitters Drag Crypto Market Cap Down 2.5% 📉
Altcoins absorbed outsized losses over the past 24 hours as broader cryptocurrency markets declined, with the total market capitalization falling 2.5% to $2.8 trillion. Ethereum dropped 5.5% to a $289 billion market cap, XRP slid 5.1% to $82.4 billion, and Solana slipped 3.8% to $60.6 billion. Bitcoin, the industry leader, fell 3.1% on the day and 2.6% on the week, holding a market cap of $1.6 trillion.
Analysts attributed the move to macroeconomic pressures. The consumer price index rose 3.7% year-over-year in September, as previously reported, and prediction markets on Myriad indicated a 28% chance of an October interest rate hike. Nick Forster, founder of options trading exchange Derive.xyz, said hedging activity on the platform doubled as traders shifted into "protection mode," with whales pulling back on optimistic bets placed earlier in the spring. "This immediate pull-back from long-term upside bets alongside aggressive short-term hedging shows a dramatic regime shift," Forster said, "with institutional participants rapidly reassessing their macro risk exposure as the path for interest rates turns murky again."
Luke Nolan, senior research associate at CoinShares, told Crypto News the pattern mirrors equity markets, where higher-beta assets typically see larger drawdowns during tightening cycles. "[It] seems to be high beta assets just got hit harder, similar to in equities as well, where the high flyers have seen outsized drawdowns in recent sessions," Nolan said. "Alts are typically more sensitive to financial conditions, and tightening affects the premise of liquidity expanding."
Privacy-focused cryptocurrency Zcash was among the day's biggest losers, falling 11% to a market capitalization of $18.5 billion. One expert attributed the decline to a buildup of leverage following recent price gains, while others cited concerns that advances in artificial intelligence could accelerate the breaking of cryptographic standards. Nolan also pointed to the U.S. dollar hitting a near 18-month high, noting that crypto tends to exhibit an inverse correlation to the U.S. Dollar Index over medium-term horizons because crypto is priced in dollars and a stronger dollar tightens liquidity and reduces risk appetite. Max Shannon, senior associate at Bitwise Europe, added that the slide reflected a unwind following altcoins' recent "strength and momentum," noting that futures open interest in altcoins excluding Ethereum had fallen by $8 billion since the start of October.
