Small Tokens Catch a Cold While $BTC Shrugs Off Kospi's 8% Meltdown 🥶

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Bitcoin hovered just above $80,000 at around 02:30 UTC on Oct. 15, 2026, brushing the Oct. 8 low of about $80,300 before recovering to roughly $81,200, down around 0.5% since midnight UTC after trimming an earlier 1% session loss. South Korea's Kospi plunged 8% and triggered circuit breakers, while Nasdaq 100 index futures slid about 1%, extending Wednesday's 1.9% drop in the Nasdaq Composite and setting a cautious tone across global markets. $BTC was last trading at $80,616.61.

Smaller altcoins absorbed the heaviest damage, with the CoinDesk 80 (CD80) sliding 2.2% against a 0.7% decline for the bitcoin-dominant CoinDesk 5 (CD5). Ether ($ETH) fell 2.0% to near $2,370 at $2,348.55, pump.fun ($PUMP) dropped 9.4% to $0.004293, and the CoinDesk Memecoin Index lost 4.0%, leaving all but six CoinDesk 100 members in the red. The contrast between bitcoin's mild dip and the altcoin rout underscored how risk appetite drained from speculative corners of the market.

Macro signals continued to drive the tape. The odds of an October Federal Reserve interest-rate hike jumped to nearly 47% on CME's FedWatch following Wednesday's hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation report, up from about 22% beforehand, before easing back to roughly 26%. Treasury yields and the path of rate expectations remain the next focal points heading into the U.S. session.

Crypto derivatives reflected the strain. Nearly $1 billion in crypto futures positions were liquidated over 24 hours, up from about $136 million a day earlier, as crowded longs were flushed after the inflation surprise. Ether bore the brunt of the deleveraging, with $200 million in long positions liquidated compared with $115 million for bitcoin, pointing to heavier long leverage in $ETH. In a notable cross-asset signal, silver (XAG) perpetual futures saw more liquidations than zcash ($ZEC), one of the top privacy coins, reflecting the growing footprint of traditional assets on crypto venues.
