Thailand's Crypto ETFs Are Live — Just Don't Expect a Bangkok Flood 🌱
Thailand opened a new chapter for retail crypto investing on Friday as its framework for Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds to list on the Stock Exchange of Thailand took effect, but early demand is likely to be measured rather than meteoric. "I would expect modest inflows initially, with tens of millions of US dollars across the first products a more realistic starting expectation than billions," James Butterfill, head of research at digital asset investment firm CoinShares, told Cointelegraph. The rules permit retail Thai investors to access locally listed crypto ETFs while restricting overseas crypto ETF investments through domestic brokers to institutional and ultra-high-net-worth investors, and the country's first crypto funds will need regulatory approval along with the required custody and distribution arrangements before trading can commence.
Butterfill pointed to Hong Kong as a reference point for how even a major financial center can struggle to draw significant crypto ETF assets, noting that Hong Kong accounts for just 0.42% of assets in global crypto exchange-traded products despite its international financial hub status. According to CoinShares data as of late September, global crypto investment products held $172.9 billion in assets under management, including $733 million in Hong Kong. Crypto ETP flow figures cited by CoinShares were current as of Sept. 25, 2026.
Butterfill added that existing investment options in Thailand may temper demand for new local ETFs, since some investors already obtain Bitcoin exposure through foreign funds or direct crypto trading. He identified MFC Asset Management as a firm to watch for potential ETF launches, noting that the company introduced its Bitcoin ETF Tracker Fund (MBTCETF-UI) in 2024, a product that invests in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), the world's largest spot Bitcoin ETF by assets under management. He also flagged ONE Asset Management as another potential issuer, after it became the first Thai asset manager to receive approval for a Bitcoin ETF-linked fund in 2024.
"Local ETFs therefore need to attract new investors or offer a compelling reason to switch," Butterfill said. He stated that he had not confirmed either MFC's or ONE's plans to launch a locally listed crypto ETF, nor determined when the first Thai products might begin trading. Cointelegraph reported that it had contacted Thailand's SEC, ONE Asset Management and MFC Asset Management about potential launches but had not received responses by publication time.
