Coinbase Tells Bitcoin: Quantum Is Coming, So Maybe Start Packing 🧳
Coinbase is urging the Bitcoin ecosystem to begin post-quantum migration now, warning that consensus changes, wallet upgrades and coordination across custodians, developers and users could take years to complete. In an October 13 blog post authored by Coinbase's Shashank Agrawal, the exchange said preparation should begin "well ahead of any CRQC announcement" because once a cryptographically relevant quantum computer arrives, it will leave insufficient time for an orderly transition. The post explicitly states it aims to inform community debate and does not set a final company position.
The exchange, which custodies roughly 5% of all Bitcoin, valued at more than $80 billion at current prices, laid out seven technical priorities for a quantum-resistant $BTC. At the core is a flexible output design, such as P2MR (BIP-360) or P2TRv2, that can introduce, replace or combine signature schemes without redesigning the protocol. Coinbase also backs staged protection, suggesting a hybrid 1-of-2 wallet design that lets funds be spent through either a classical or post-quantum key. Other priorities include a stateless option paired with any stateful scheme to guard against forgery, deterministic and constant-time implementations, and compatibility with multiparty computation for institutions.
The push highlights a legacy problem the network cannot ignore. Coinbase's quantum advisory board estimated in April that about 6.9 million BTC sit in addresses with exposed public keys, including reused keys, lost keys, pay-to-public-key outputs and Satoshi-era holdings, holdings worth roughly $575 billion at $83,307 per coin. Coinbase argues these legacy funds need their own governance and engineering track running alongside signature work, and suggests weighing whether late movers could still migrate if Bitcoin later phases out current signature types.
The call comes as regulators and law enforcement escalate warnings. Coinbase's post follows the $15 million Bitcoin Security Consortium and recent advisories from the EU and Europol flagging quantum risk, with wallets identified as the principal vulnerability. Institutional voices have also tied long-term $BTC outlooks to the issue, including Kevin O'Leary's September statement that Bitcoin can reach $1 million only if quantum doubts are resolved. Coinbase's framework, drawn from its own work and institutional customer needs, is positioned as a starting point for a multi-year migration the exchange says Bitcoin cannot afford to delay.
