Solana's Alpenglow upgrade lands October 21 — 150ms finality means goodbye to TowerBFT's 13-second nap 🏎️
Solana's Alpenglow consensus upgrade will activate on mainnet-beta on October 21 at approximately 14:50 UTC, at the start of epoch 1064, Solana developer Anza confirmed on October 13, 2026. The release marks the end of 18 months of development work and retires TowerBFT, Solana's longstanding consensus system, in which validators post votes as on-chain transactions. Alpenglow replaces it with Votor, a new voting protocol that takes votes off-chain, lets validators exchange them directly, and aggregates them into certificates, allowing blocks to lock in after a single round of voting or two rounds at most. Finality is targeted at roughly 150 milliseconds, down from about 12.8 seconds under the current system, which means the moment a transaction becomes irreversible arrives almost as fast as the optimistic confirmation Solana already returns. When 80% or more of stake backs a block in the first round it finalizes immediately, while support between 60% and 80% triggers a second round with 60% thresholds to decide whether the block is finalized or skipped, a design the Solana Foundation says tolerates 20% malicious stake plus another 20% offline.
For ordinary users, wallets and apps should behave as they do today. The Solana Virtual Machine, transaction formats, programs, and fee mechanics are unchanged, and the "confirmed" and "finalized" commitment levels effectively become one and the same. Validators must run an Agave-based client and hold at least 0.8 SOL above the rent-exempt minimum to cover the new Validator Admission Ticket, a per-epoch fee of the same size that gets burned. The ticket replaces the roughly 1 SOL per epoch validators previously spent on vote transaction fees under TowerBFT, and a validator that cannot cover the cost sits out voting and block production for the following epoch. The feature gate turns on as epoch 1064 begins, though TowerBFT stays in control for another 5,000 slots, roughly 18 minutes, before Alpenglow takes charge at slot 459,653,000. Phase 1, known as Votor, arrives in Agave 4.3; Phase 2, known as Rotor, will replace Turbine but has no release date yet.
Anza said the rollout targets smoother on-chain experiences such as near-instant confirmations at checkout, while developers streaming data or indexing blocks will need to adapt to multi-bank slots and the removal of vote transactions. Validators approved the upgrade in September 2025 when the SIMD-0326 proposal passed with 98.27% of votes cast in favor.
SOL traded near $107 in mid-October, down roughly 9% to 10.5% over the past week as the broader crypto market sold off, with limited price reaction to the fixed activation date. Analysts have flagged resistance near $125 and a support zone around $100 to $105, with some pointing to a possible path toward $150 on a decisive break above resistance, while migration issues, temporary drops in reported transaction counts, or continued ETF outflows could weigh on sentiment. Broader market conditions and ETF flows are likely to drive short-term price action more than the upgrade itself.
