Wells Fargo Stablecoins the Scene While US Demand Throws a Coin Flip 🪙
Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf said the bank is preparing for stablecoin opportunities in the United States even though the demand picture at home remains uncertain. "Use cases in the US for stablecoins remain unclear, but we're building solutions to be prepared as opportunities potentially unfold," Scharf said during the October 13 third-quarter earnings call. Third-quarter profit at the bank rose to nearly USD 6 billion.
Wells Fargo is part of a group of 21 banks developing a joint venture to issue a dollar-pegged stablecoin, with a planned launch in 2027. Other lenders in the consortium include Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank, with the coin targeting payments and digital asset settlement. The institution is also expanding tokenized deposit services for corporate clients and has discussed digital-asset pathways with Kraken's parent company.
Scharf said Wells Fargo is increasing investment in both traditional and digital payment infrastructure for consumers and businesses, including new settlement systems designed to improve corporate settlement processes. Reports have also linked the bank to talks with Kraken's parent over further cryptocurrency service offerings.
