Trezor Trims Reseller Roster to "Trusted Hands Only" After $93M Wallet Drama 🧅
Trezor, one of the largest crypto hardware wallet manufacturers, is cutting the number of shops authorized to sell its devices, Chief Commercial Officer Danny Sanders confirmed. The move follows a confirmed supply-chain attack on rival wallet maker Ledger, in which a device sold through Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBilis carried a hidden implant designed to steal users' recovery phrases. "Let us be very clear: there is not a single piece of evidence that Trezor devices have been compromised," the Trezor team stated in a letter to affected partners.
The Ledger security incident came to light after the company's security team identified an implant that reads the 24-word recovery phrase off the device screen during setup, then transmits it over a cellular connection, according to Ledger's latest implant update. On-chain researchers at Bitquery estimate suspected losses above $93 million, though Ledger has not confirmed a total and ties every confirmed case to CryptoBilis. Users have claimed tampered devices reached Europe, which Ledger has not confirmed.
Trezor's letter to dropped partners did not name Ledger directly, instead citing a recent supply-chain attack on "another hardware wallet brand." Sanders wrote that affected resellers lose their authorization on January 1, 2027, and that Trezor has stopped shipping them new stock, though they may continue selling existing inventory through Black Friday and the holiday season. The company has not disclosed how many resellers were dropped or which markets are affected, with Sanders noting that each country was evaluated based on revenue, distribution reach, and Trezor's own presence there.
Remaining Trezor partners will operate under an updated legal framework that includes closer scrutiny of how devices are sourced, stored, and handled. Ledger has publicly called for shared anti-tamper standards across all hardware wallet manufacturers, while Trezor is moving first to tighten its own distribution channel. Neither company has indicated further changes to existing product lines or firmware schedules.
