Karp's Crystal Ball: Palantir CEO Warns AI Might Soon Read Your Mind — Markets Yawn Anyway 📈
Palantir CEO Alex Karp is sounding the alarm that the same predictive AI tools used to forecast consumer purchases and loan repayment could eventually be aimed inward, estimating the private thoughts of people in domestic settings. "You can actually predict people's behaviour, which may mean you are predicting their actual thoughts one is going to have in a domestic context. Now this is something we must look at controlling it," Karp said in a recent interview. Palantir, whose software supports US military and government operations including battlefield data analysis, builds the kind of systems Karp warns could be redirected at civilians, and he cautioned that companies could comply with the letter of the law while undermining its spirit.
Investors have so far shrugged off the ethical debate. Palantir's stock ($PLTR) set a record high of $212.94 yesterday and trades near $209, up roughly 25% over the past month and more than 50% over six months. Over five years, the shares have risen more than 780%, lifting the company's market value above $500 billion as government contracts and commercial AI demand continue to drive momentum.
Karp's core concerns center on the speed of deployment: the same predictive methods used externally could be turned inward, limits on military use could leave the United States exposed to rivals, and any control framework must be addressed before the technology spreads further. The boundaries for systems that analyze personal behavior remain unresolved and will be shaped by companies, regulators and courts in the coming years.
