TradFi Goes Full Degen: S&P's Index Just Got Swapped Onchain Without the Banks Knowing 🤷‍♂️

—By our DeFi Desk2 min read

S&P Dow Jones Indices has completed the first onchain over-the-counter derivatives swap referencing a fully tokenized version of its iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index, the index provider announced. The transaction was executed on the Canton network between trading firms DRW and Marex using Derivnex, an institutional derivatives platform operating on Canton, with crypto market data firm Kaiko responsible for tokenizing the underlying index on the network.

According to a press release from S&P Dow Jones Indices, the trade was structured as a total return swap, allowing the counterparties to gain economic exposure to the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index without directly holding it. The transaction contained the trade terms and was executed as a smart contract on Canton through Derivnex. "The transaction represents the first OTC derivative to reference a fully tokenized index on distributed ledger infrastructure," the release stated.

The structure provides DRW and Marex with a shared, synchronized record for managing valuation, margining and settlement throughout the trade lifecycle, replacing the fragmented post-trade workflows typically associated with OTC derivatives. By embedding the trade terms into a smart contract on Canton, the firms said counterparties can monitor positions against a single source of truth rather than reconciling across multiple internal ledgers.

The milestone marks a notable convergence between traditional market infrastructure and distributed ledger technology, with S&P Dow Jones Indices joining other established index providers that have explored tokenization on permissioned networks. Canton, the digital asset network built by Digital Asset, has been positioning itself as infrastructure for institutional participants seeking to bring regulated financial products onchain while preserving privacy controls familiar from conventional markets.

The completed swap adds to a growing list of real-world asset tokenization initiatives across fixed income, equities and money market funds, as banks, asset managers and index providers increasingly pilot distributed ledger workflows for settlement, collateral management and intraday liquidity. For S&P Dow Jones Indices, the move signals continued experimentation with onchain distribution of its flagship benchmarks beyond traditional distribution channels.
