Patient Zero of Bitcoin Bags Springs Back to Life After 1,600 Years of HODL-ing 🐋

A bitcoin whale that received its coins just days before the March 2020 Covid-19 crash has moved roughly 4,582 BTC, worth $377.6 million, to five separate addresses on Monday, blockchain data from Arkham and mempool.space shows. The wallet, identified as 18VmXvkF4cgLi35RtMiHHDpvMjUCyVpQ9x, had remained largely dormant since first receiving the funds on March 3, 2020, from address 17VX1BEjYVyBMi2vw6nXDrpwMvCSweHZot. At the time of deposit, the holdings were valued at approximately $40.8 million. Four of the recipient addresses received exactly 1,000 BTC each, while the fifth received about 582 BTC. As of writing, none of the five receiving addresses has moved the coins further.

The timing of the original acquisition proved notable. Nine days after the coins landed in the wallet, Covid-19 panic gripped global markets and bitcoin plunged more than 40% to under $4,000. That price level has not been revisited since, meaning the transferred holdings appreciated roughly ninefold between acquisition and Monday's transfer, when BTC traded at $83,696.96. The wallet recorded no outgoing transactions for more than four years after receiving the funds. Its first outbound activity came in August 2024, a small 0.009 BTC payment to bc1qmpjs55x326wvnvtwvkwfqqzzlyljk7ffmdw32g, with the remainder of the balance returned to the originating wallet.

Onchain analysts frequently monitor long-dormant whale activity because spikes in metrics such as Coin Days Destroyed (CDD) and older Spent Output Age Bands can precede periods of elevated volatility. Data and insights from CryptoQuant indicate that such surges are often interpreted as potential leading indicators of price corrections, since large transfers from long-held wallets may suggest an owner is preparing to sell. However, movements of this scale can also reflect routine security practices, such as rebalancing across addresses controlled by the same entity. The motivation behind Monday's transfer remains unclear.

The transfer comes during a broader period of large-scale government-linked bitcoin movements. Addresses associated with the U.S. government have recently moved bitcoin worth at least $1.5 billion, though it remains unconfirmed whether those transactions were intended for market sale or constituted internal movements between government-controlled wallets.
