When Asia Sneezes, Bitcoin Catches a Cold: $BTC Brief Visit to $84K Ended by $800B Equity Sneeze 🧻
Bitcoin briefly reclaimed $84,000 on October 13 before reversing as a broad sell-off across Asian stock markets erased more than $800 billion in equity value and dragged global risk appetite lower. The move underscored how tightly the largest cryptocurrency still tracks equity markets during risk-off episodes.
Selling began in Asia, where South Korea's Kospi fell as much as 7% and chipmakers Samsung and SK Hynix dropped between 7% and 10%. Japan's Nikkei 225 slipped about 2%, while Taiwan and other regional indices declined sharply. The rout was attributed in part to renewed doubts about the artificial intelligence boom after reports of progress by China's ChangXin Memory Technologies on higher-density memory chips, which raised competitive fears for established players.
Bitcoin held up better than regional equities but remained vulnerable to leveraged positioning. According to CoinGlass data, crypto liquidations totaled $812.26 million over the past 24 hours, affecting 169,570 traders. Long positions accounted for roughly 84.3% of that total, or about $685.12 million, with Bitcoin itself posting approximately $193.24 million in liquidations, nearly 74% of which were longs. The pressure followed an earlier move earlier in the month below $84,000 after prices had reached the $86,000–$87,000 range.
Bitcoin faces support between $80,000 and $82,000, with a decisive break below that band potentially triggering further liquidations, while resistance sits between $84,000 and $87,000; a sustained move above that range could open a path toward $100,000. Macro drivers, including U.S. inflation data, corporate earnings from technology firms, shifts in Federal Reserve expectations, elevated Treasury yields, and oil prices above $100 a barrel, continue to weigh on speculative assets. On-chain indicators paint a more constructive picture, as exchange supply of Bitcoin continues to shrink and spot ETF flows have turned positive on some sessions, providing a degree of institutional support.
