Smaller tokens are stealing the spotlight this week, with the CoinDesk 80 climbing about 3% over 24 hours — more than double the 1.2% gain posted by the CoinDesk 5. Bitcoin BTC $84,155.39 is trading below $83,500 after touching a high above $84,000 on Sunday, while ether ETH $2,427.50 has added roughly 2.5% to $2,560. The rally is unfolding in the thinnest corner of the market.

A year after the Oct. 10, 2025 flash crash, order-book depth for bitcoin and ether has rebuilt to pre-crash levels in dollar terms, while altcoin liquidity has continued to erode, according to CoinDesk research. "Market makers have returned to majors," said Joshua de Vos, research lead at CoinDesk, in Saturday's report. Institutional flows are moving in the opposite direction: U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETFs recorded $681 million of net outflows last week, the largest weekly total since June, according to SoSoValue, with most of the selling concentrated on Wednesday and Thursday. Spot ether ETFs have not seen a day of inflows since Sept. 28, marking a nine-day outflow streak — the longest since June.

Energy markets are providing some breathing room, with WTI futures down roughly 2% to $90 per barrel after President Donald Trump said Russia would supply 300,000 metric tons of diesel to global markets, a partial easing of sanctions. Traders are now looking ahead to Wednesday's U.S. consumer price index report for the next macro cue.

In derivatives, futures activity is heating up without leverage piling on. Twenty-four-hour trading volume has climbed 81% to $126 billion, while open interest is up a more modest 2.44% at $145.8 billion, indicating traders are rotating through positions rather than initiating them. Longs account for 52% of 24-hour taker volume, up from 48% last week, suggesting sellers are no longer dominating execution flow. The token has tracked the fourth-largest 24-hour futures volume at $5.46 billion, trailing only bitcoin.
