Sberbank Joins Russia's Crypto Roster, Promises Products by Dec 1 🎄

—By our Regulation & Policy Desk2 min read

The Central Bank of Russia has added Sberbank to its authorized cryptocurrency exchange register, expanding the country's largest lender's role in the regulated digital asset market under new federal framework. The approval was logged Monday and positions Sberbank alongside eight other institutions cleared to exchange digital currencies, including VTB and T-Invest Lab, the latter operating within the T-Technologies group that also houses T-Bank. Sberbank said it intends to introduce its first crypto products on December 1, 2026, delivered through the digital banking interfaces already familiar to its customers.

The exchange registration builds on Sberbank's earlier enrollment as a digital depository responsible for maintaining records of cryptocurrency ownership and confirming the rights of asset holders. With the new authorization, the bank can now move beyond custody and offer transaction services to users through platforms tied to its existing retail and corporate infrastructure. Officials at the Bank of Russia have framed the registers as a controlled channel for digital asset activity, distinguishing licensed activity from offshore platforms that have long dominated Russian-language trading volumes.

The framework allowing licensed banks, exchanges, and depositories to provide regulated crypto services took effect under Russia's digital asset law earlier this year, with periodic updates to the central bank's official lists as new participants are vetted. Sberbank's dual registration — as both exchange and depository — marks it as the most consequential entrant so far, given its scale, state ties, and branch footprint. The central bank has not disclosed transaction limits, fee structures, or the specific crypto assets Sberbank will be permitted to list on launch.
