Hardware wallets get humbled: Ledger implant fiasco has Bitcoin maximalist Plan B saying "zero regrets" going ETF 🪙

The discovery of a hardware implant inside a compromised Ledger wallet has intensified debate over whether exchange-traded funds now offer safer custody for Bitcoin than self-managed cold storage, with prominent analyst Plan B declaring he has "zero regrets" about moving his BTC into ETFs in 2025. In a Monday X post, Plan B said the recent Ledger and Coldcard exploits vindicated his then-controversial decision, writing: "Zero regrets" about my ETF decision. 21Shares co-founder Ophelia Snyder told Cointelegraph in an email on Monday that large holders have been converting self-custodied assets to ETFs for "enhanced security" for years, describing that as one of the main "selling points" for ETFs. Snyder added that the recent exploits have elevated that trend into part of the "public discourse." Blockchain investigators estimated losses tied to the impost could top $86 million, raising fresh questions about the security of self-custodial cold wallets.

Hardware wallets can still be secure custodial options, but providers need a better understanding of the emerging threat landscape, according to Blockstream CEO and Hashcash inventor Adam Back. "Surprisingly few manufacturers understood the generic attacks, or so it seemed from their marketing and design choices, for the last decade. Time to catch up with threat-modelling," wrote Back in a Saturday X post. Back stopped short of recommending ETFs over hardware wallets, but his remarks added weight to calls for improved device-level security audits across the industry.

Snyder said the core issue with self-custodial wallets is that their security depends on the technical expertise and individual setup of each investor. "Without taking the time and rigor to set up properly, self-custody will always be less secure than handing over the assets to a specialist firm whose job it is to manage those protocols for you," she said. Bitcoin security researcher and cypherpunk Jameson Lopp also said self-custodial wallets can be a robust option, but urged investors to avoid a mass migration that would create new central points of failure during rushed transactions. The episode comes as Standard Chartered advances its plans to roll out institutional crypto custody services in Singapore, underscoring growing demand for regulated custody alternatives.
