Bitwise CIO stacks his chips: Bitcoin, gold, and a four-coin ladder to debasement 🚀
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan said Bitcoin could reach hundreds of thousands of dollars if traditional portfolios shift even a modest share of their allocations toward $BTC and gold, according to remarks on the New Era Finance Podcast. He framed the thesis as a debasement trade, in which investors move capital into assets expected to hold value as government debt expands and fiat currencies lose purchasing power. Hougan argued that conventional stock and bond portfolios remain exposed to fiat currency risk and that redirecting part of those holdings into hard assets could reduce that exposure. Asked about portfolio construction, Hougan said, "Maybe I should be 90/10, right? 90% fiat, 10% hard assets, which is primarily Bitcoin and gold. If that sort of thinking goes mainstream, you could see huge inflows into Bitcoin, and you could see a price measured in multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars."
The Bitwise CIO also ranked Bitcoin as the strongest risk-adjusted asset in crypto, citing rising government debt and spending as factors that reinforce its store-of-value role. He named Bitcoin, Ethereum ($ETH), Solana ($SOL), and Chainlink ($LINK) as the four core assets for exposure to debasement and tokenization, while flagging Hyperliquid as a possible addition. Hougan added that Zcash and Venice are "DeFi assets that I'm very bullish on," though he maintained that a broad-based debasement allocation should still center on the four-asset core.
Hougan tied the outlook to two structural trends he expects to define the next phase of the crypto market: the expansion of stablecoins and the growth of tokenization. He said both trends should be evaluated over a multi-year horizon rather than measured by short-term price moves. He also noted that revenue mechanics and token supply dynamics are likely to distinguish long-term winners from the rest of the field as those trends develop.
Bitwise Asset Management operates one of the most watched crypto fund complexes in the United States, and Hougan's comments were delivered during a recorded podcast appearance. He did not provide a specific price target, timeline, or probability for the "multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars" scenario, and he framed the figure as conditional on mainstream adoption rather than a forecast.
