Yields Up, Crypto Down: Bitcoin Braces for the CPI That Could Make or Break the Bond Brawl 📉

The benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield climbed above 5.35% on October 5, 2026, reaching its highest level in 24 years, as Bitcoin fell below $82,000 under renewed selling pressure across the crypto market, according to exchange Bitunix's October market analysis. The 30-year yield reached approximately 5.7%, levels last seen in 2002. Higher Treasury yields give investors the option to earn interest payments backed by the US government rather than hold non-yielding assets like Bitcoin, and Bitunix stated that this shift in investor preferences is creating additional pressure on cryptocurrencies.

Pressure extended beyond crypto. Higher yields also increase borrowing costs and can reduce the appeal of technology stocks, and Bitunix reported weekly declines in crypto-linked equities including Strategy and Circle. The wider crypto market posted steep losses from October 3 to 9. Bitcoin declined 3.80%, Ethereum lost 8.39% and XRP fell 7.09%. Only roughly 20% of the top 300 cryptocurrencies tracked by Bitunix recorded gains, with a median weekly return of -5.18%. Decentralized finance tokens also dropped, with Uniswap's UNI down 18.37% and PancakeSwap's CAKE down 15.92%. Meanwhile, The Sandbox's SAND rallied 57.71%, a move Bitunix attributed primarily to trading sentiment and capital flows rather than fundamentals.

The next major catalyst arrives October 14, when the US releases September's Consumer Price Index. Bitunix cited an expected annual inflation rate of 3.6%, up from the prior reading of 3.4%. The latest ISM services report added fresh pressure to the bond market, with the prices index rising to 74. Higher-than-expected inflation could strengthen expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates elevated for longer, while weaker-than-expected data could revive bets on rate cuts and improve investor appetite for risk. Gold returned to $4,200 and Brent crude climbed above $100 per barrel as commodities diverged from the crypto sell-off, and Bitunix noted that a sustained decline in yields would be required for crypto markets to stage a durable recovery.
