Bitcoin Above $84K Has One Question for $681M in ETF Outflows: Was It Something I Said? 🪨

Bitcoin held above $84,000 on Monday, recovering from an early dip to around $83,500 and approaching Sunday's high of $84,145, as falling oil prices and a broad crypto rally offset heavy withdrawals from U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds. The leading cryptocurrency by market value traded near $84,050, according to CoinDesk, with $BTC quoted at $84,155.39.

The advance extended beyond bitcoin. Ether ($ETH, $2,552.40) and XRP climbed, and nine of the top ten tokens by market capitalization posted gains over 24 hours, according to Purvang Mashru, lead analyst at BitDelta India. Avalanche led with a 5.1% jump to $10.91, Chainlink rose 2.4% to $13.35, Solana added 1.2%, and BNB, XRP, Dogecoin and Cardano also traded higher, Mashru told CoinDesk.

Oil weakness helped the risk-on tone. WTI futures slipped 1.8% to $90.28, retracing a spike on Thursday that had injected fresh uncertainty into markets. The move followed President Donald Trump's Friday announcement that his administration had reached an agreement for Russia to supply 300,000 metric tons of diesel fuel to international and domestic markets, a partial easing of U.S. sanctions on Russian oil imports. Trump also said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate "energy ceasefire" to halt infrastructure strikes, though Ukrainian officials said they were not consulted and Russian military strikes on Ukraine's energy grid have since continued.

The rebound came against the backdrop of significant ETF outflows. U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETFs registered $681 million in withdrawals last week, the largest weekly total since June, according to SoSoValue, with most of the damage concentrated on Wednesday and Thursday. "ETF flows remain volatile. US spot Bitcoin ETFs saw heavy outflows on October 7 and 8, signaling cautious institutional sentiment," Vikram Subburaj, CEO of India-based Giottus Exchange, told CoinDesk.

Mashru also flagged the outflows while noting that the macro backdrop remained demanding, pointing out that Treasury yields reached 24-year highs during the week ending Oct. 9. Both analysts identified $82,000 as a key support level, with U.S. inflation data due Oct. 14 cited as the market's next major catalyst.
