Ethereum's whale crowd goes full "short squeeze me" — but data says they're not bluffing

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Ethereum is drawing a noticeably bearish posture from its largest holders, according to analyst Joao Wedson, whose on-chain readings point to a meaningful tilt toward short positions among whales. Wedson said the shift is visible across multiple indicators that track positioning differences between big-money participants and smaller investors.

The 30-day and 180-day Open Interest Delta (OED) for ETH are both sitting in negative territory, indicating that aggregate futures exposure on the asset has contracted rather than expanded over those windows. The Whale vs. Small Investor delta, which measures the gap in positioning between the two cohorts, is also trending negative, reinforcing the view that whales are leaning away from longs.

Wedson said the combined signal shows that large market participants have materially reduced their long exposure over time and migrated toward short positions. He suggested the setup could precede a new wave of liquidations if the trend continues, framing the data as a warning about potential selling pressure on Ethereum ($ETH).

The analyst's commentary lands as broader market chatter around $ETH supply dynamics has intensified, with traders watching leverage and open interest for clues about directional risk. Negative readings on both short- and long-horizon OED are uncommon and tend to coincide with phases in which professional desks are repositioning rather than accumulating, according to how the metrics have historically behaved.

Wedson stopped short of calling a specific price target, but reiterated that the whale cohort's pivot toward shorts is the most actionable element in his current read. He added that retail positioning, by contrast, has not shown the same magnitude of shift, leaving the divergence between the two groups at levels that have preceded volatile moves in past cycles.

Whether that volatility materializes into another leg down or a squeeze against the newly crowded short side remains contingent on spot flows and macro conditions, neither of which Wedson addressed in his latest update. For now, his data set places Ethereum firmly in the "large holders are hedging, not buying" column.
