$21M in Meta Shares Sold, Zero Bought: Insiders Clear the Register While Wall Street Holds 📉

—By our Markets Desk2 min read

Meta insiders have logged 172 stock transactions over the past six months, with no insider purchases recorded among them, according to data highlighted by unusual_whales on October 10. Mark Zuckerberg sold $21.4 million worth of shares on September 24, when $META traded near $778, and the stock closed at around $719 on Friday, representing a decline of roughly 8% since that transaction. Other senior executives have followed a similar pattern: CFO Susan Li has sold approximately $95 million, COO Javier Olivan has sold approximately $24 million through repeated transactions often occurring weekly, and product chief Chris Cox sold $13 million on September 9. CTO Andrew Bosworth has also disposed of shares during the period.

SEC filings reviewed alongside the trading data indicate the sales were largely pre-scheduled under Rule 10b5-1 trading plans, in some cases arranged months in advance. At least one filing states that a transaction "does not represent a sale," and certain transfers were tied to tax-related withholding rather than discretionary selling. Zuckerberg retains a substantial controlling stake in the company despite the recent disposals.

Wells Fargo has set a $1,000 price target on $META, implying potential upside of close to 40% from current levels. That outlook is anchored in expectations that Meta's AI-related investments will translate into accelerated revenue growth, though analysts note the rising infrastructure spending could weigh on margins if returns arrive later than projected.

Other sell-side targets sit below Wells Fargo's figure, reflecting more conservative assumptions on the pace of monetization from Meta's AI build-out. Executives' continued use of pre-arranged selling plans and the absence of any offsetting insider buying leave the insider-activity signal mixed, with filings offering little evidence that leadership is positioning for a sharp decline in the share price.
